Requirement
Louvers are used on the back of locomotives
to control airflow, maintaining the correct
operating temperature of a train's engine,
generator and compressor. A supplier of
rail products needed a new source for the
actuator cylinders that control the louvers.
The new cylinders had to be a high quality
direct replacement for cylinders previously
in use. They needed to include the right
mounting accessories so they could be
dropped in to the existing design.
Solution
IMI Precision Engineering designed custom
cylinders with dimensions that fit the existing
footprint exactly. Non-standard spring
forces exceed performance requirements
for louver adjustments. The new cylinder
gives end users longer cylinder life and lower
total cost of ownership. This heavy-duty
cylinder withstands temperature extremes,
vibration and mechanical damage – all key
requirements in rail operating environments.
The new design also makes it possible to
rebuild the actuator, creating a new business
opportunity and revenue stream for the
customer.
