Requirement
In the quest for ever faster high-speed
passenger trains, efficient aerodynamic
design is increasingly important. One way to
improve aerodynamics is to move the system
for coupling and decoupling locomotives
from the train's exterior into the nose cone.
This requires a system for opening and
closing the nose cone so trains can be
reconfigured quickly and automatically. A
supplier of coupling systems wanted an
integrated assembly to reduce the complexity
of the pneumatic circuits and the number of
components required to open the nose cone.
Besides being modular and compact, the
assembly had to remain effective even at low
temperatures.
Solution
IMI Precision Engineering designed a new
locking cylinder to move the doors of the
nose cover. They also combined existing
IMI Norgren VR61 valves and other proven
components on a custom base plate to
create a single manifold assembly that
controls the entire nose cone coupling
system. The modular platform can be
configured to fit into any nose cone design
and eliminates extra wiring and tubing,
making installation and servicing faster. The
assembly operates at -40 degrees, meeting
a key operating requirement for high-speed
rail and allowing customers to standardize
offerings across the globe.
