Location: Malaysia Customer: PETRONAS Growth driver: Resource Scarcity Case study Requirement Compressed hydrocarbon (HC) gas is commonly used on o shore oilrigs to control instruments when compressed air is not available for use. However, moisture, particles or oil in the gas can damage downstream equipment and cause malfunctions that make it di cult to control the process e ciently. The Malaysian oil and gas company PETRONAS required a fi ltration system that could e ectively clean and condition the gas for safe use with the valves that control pumping operations. The system had to be durable enough to stand up to the contaminants common in HC gas as well as to withstand the harsh marine operating environment. It also had to be long lasting to accommodate the long maintenance cycles of unmanned satellite platforms. Solution The IMI Norgren F22 stainless steel fi lter was already proven to withstand the corrosive salt-spray environment. For this application, Norgren (now IMI Precision Engineering) modifi ed it with a unique new convoluted fi lter element that allows high fl ow with minimal pressure drop. A three-stage fi ltration system uses two general-purpose fi lters to remove particles of 25 microns and 5 microns. The third stage is the new IMI Norgren F22H, which removes water, particles down to 0.01 micron and oil to 0.01 ppm. The new fi ltration system fi t the original equipment footprint, simplifying installation. The larger fi lter and an optional automatic drain extend maintenance cycles.
