Magnetically Coupled
Rodless Cylinders
The above cutaway drawings show how IMI Norgren
magnetically coupled rodless cylinders work. Three magnets
are located on the carriage, with three matching magnets on the
piston. (For 5⁄16" bore, five magnets are used.) These magnets
form a strong bond that holds the carriage and piston together.
When the cylinder is actuated, the piston and carriage move
as one unit. The magnetic attraction between the magnets
determines a cylinder's magnetic coupling strength.

Magnetically coupled rodless cylinders provide
one of the highest coupling strengths available,
carrying higher loads without causing the piston to
uncouple from the carriage. IMI Norgren also offers
two magnetic coupling strength options (2-Star and
3-Star) to suit a wide variety of applications. The
2-Star option uses two sets of magnets instead of
three. (For 5⁄16" bore, four sets of magnets are used.)
IMI Norgren offers a model with built-in guides
(MC2S/MC3S) and an unguided unit (MC2/MC3).
