Location: Gulf Coast Customer: Petrochemical plant making high performance polymers and fabrics Key benefit: Documented FM 7400 compliance Case study Requirement Operators of a petrochemical plant were retrofitting the large natural gas-fed boilers that generate the heat their processes require. They needed 2/2 shut-off valves that meet Factory Mutual FM 7400 explosion and safety ratings for valves controlling flammable gases. In fact, they required documentation that each valve be calibrated, tested and certified in both horizontal and vertical orientations. The valve supplier used previously was unable to perform the testing and provide the documentation for individual valves. Solution The Industrial Automation team at IMI Precision Engineering worked with a distributor to introduce the customer to the stainless steel, explosion-proof IMI Buschjost ® 84490EX solenoid valve, which also has a more robust diaphragm than the incumbent valve. Then engineers in Germany and the U.S. developed a procedure to test each and every valve, installed both vertically and horizontally, at pressure for five minutes. A unique serial number links each valve to its own documentation. After an "unboxing" with technicians and engineers, the customer placed an initial order for 100 valves. FM 7400 approved safety valves meet customer documentation requirements Engineering GREAT Solutions © Norgren, Inc. 2018 IMI Buschjost is a registered trademark owned by entities within the IMI PLC group of companies.
